Etihad becomes first Gulf airline to connect Charlotte and Abu Dhabi
UAE carrier’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner to serve booming North Carolina hub
DUBAI: Etihad Airways is set to launch non-stop flights to Charlotte, North Carolina, starting 4 May 2026, marking a new chapter in its transatlantic expansion.
The UAE’s national airline becomes the first carrier from the region to operate direct flights to the southern US city, strengthening ties between Abu Dhabi and the United States.
Charlotte, a rising American financial and cultural hub, becomes Etihad’s sixth US destination. It joins New York, Chicago, Washington, Boston, and Atlanta – the latter launching 2 July 2025. The new route will operate four times weekly using the airline’s state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner, offering travellers Etihad’s signature service in both Business and Economy cabins.
Abu Dhabi to Charlotte
“Charlotte represents a strategic addition to our US network, unlocking direct access to one of the country’s most dynamic and fast-growing regions,” said Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways. The announcement follows the airline’s broader plans to enhance connectivity and provide more direct options for travellers to and from the UAE.
Charlotte is a key centre for banking, motorsports, and tech industries and is home to major U.S. corporations. Its airport – Charlotte Douglas International – ranked sixth globally in aircraft movements in 2024, underlining its position as a vital aviation hub. The city also boasts popular attractions such as the NASCAR Hall of Fame and scenic greenways, appealing to both business and leisure travellers.

Etihad’s schedule includes early morning departures from Abu Dhabi with midday returns from Charlotte, designed to offer smooth onward connections across the airline’s global network.
Travellers flying into the US from Abu Dhabi can take advantage of US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance at Zayed International Airport, arriving in Charlotte as domestic passengers and avoiding lengthy queues.
